Building a new Hospice
07 July 2023
Your new hospice
The number of local people needing us to help them through terminal illness and until the end of their lives, is at an all-time high. Yet given our ageing and growing population, and mounting pressures on NHS services, more and more people will need Phyllis Tuckwell in future.
In fact, as many as 1 in every 3 local people will rely on Phyllis Tuckwell to support them at the end of their lives. To care for all those that needs us, we have taken the ambitious decision to build a new Hospice, and we are asking for your help to raise the £ millions needed to make it happen.
The purpose-built Hospice will be larger and better equipped than the building it will replace. It will have a specialist 18 bedded unit, to care for those with the most intensive medical and nursing needs. However, it will offer so much more. It will have a therapy suite and treatment rooms, an education suite, a café, a rehabilitation suite and counselling rooms. All wrapped by beautiful gardens to improve wellbeing.
From this state-of-the-art facility our clinicians will offer Inpatient and Outpatient services, free of charge – to everyone that needs them. From it we will support men and women, young and old, with cancer and other terminal and advanced illnesses. We shall also help local families and children through their grief and bereavement.
Furthermore, it will also house specialist community teams, who will support people to have the most dignified, peaceful and pain free deaths in their own homes.
This much needed facility will serve a community of over 500,000 people across Surrey and Hampshire, and each year thousands of local people will benefit. We will not receive any government help to build the new Hospice and as charity we urgently need your help to raise £6 Million to make it happen.
Provision of services during the build
Phyllis Tuckwell will continue to offer its specialist services throughout the period of the build, from alternative locations:
In-Patient Unit (IPU)
Phyllis Tuckwell will occupy 10-beds within a new separate wing of Kings Lodge care home in Camberley. Phyllis Tuckwell will run independently from the care home, so our admission processes, staffing and inpatient care will continue as currently. Please continue to refer to Phyllis Tuckwell in your usual way. This reduces our capacity from our current 14 inpatient beds, however it was the only viable option available for the duration of the new build. Phyllis Tuckwell will continue to work with our integrated care partners to enable access to the IPU and to support patients to be cared for at home, including the continuing development of our virtual ward.
Community
Our multi-professional community services will operate from two hubs: our existing Beacon Centre site in Guildford which has recently been refurbished; and a temporary Phyllis Tuckwell satellite office at Headway House in Farnham town centre. Counselling services will be provided across the Phyllis Tuckwell locations, according to patient preference.
Outpatient appointments
Our recently refurbished Beacon Centre in Guildford, which now offers increased outpatient capacity, will continue to be a hub for our community services and will be the centre for all our Living Well groups and outpatients.
