In an increasingly fast-paced world, human connection has never been more essential, that’s why Shooting Star Children’s Hospices’ groups, events and sessions are so important. One such group is Splashers, their specialised hydrotherapy group. Ginny Hancock, Physiotherapist at Shooting Star shares the huge benefits these sessions provide.
“Many of the children we support require warm water, making other pools, such as in leisure centres, unsuitable. In September 2023, we launched Splashers, for babies and children with complex needs. We created an environment tailored to their needs in our hydrotherapy pool – warm water, specialised support and a judgement-free space,” Ginny explains.
“These sessions are designed to empower parents and carers to feel more confident in the water with their children, particularly when they have conditions that impact movement. Additionally, the group encourages peer support, helping parents and carers connect with others facing similar challenges.
“The monthly group has a different theme each session, for example dinosaurs, the weather and Alice in Wonderland. The group encourages children to explore their surroundings, interact with each other, take part in a sensory story and have fun in the water.
“In 2024, we refined the Splashers programme, dividing it into two age groups, Tadpoles (one- to two years old) and Ducklings (pre-schoolers).
Supported mum, Jess, shared, “Alfie has really enjoyed his time with the Splashers group. It’s been a lovely time for us to make new friends, and the Physio team put so much effort in to making us feel welcome and making each session different and interactive for the children.”
Ginny concludes, “Splashers has become more than just swim sessions – it’s now a supportive community for both children and parents.”
