On Sunday 4th December we come together to remember loved ones in Phyllis Tuckwell’s annual Light up a Life service.

Throughout the service, we will sing carols, listen to readings and watch as the lights of the Christmas tree are switched on for the first time, with each light representing a life we are remembering.

The festive season will soon be here, and we know this can be a challenging time when a loved one is no longer with us. For this reason, we invite you to find comfort and support by joining us for our 2022 Light up a Life celebrations.

Service of Remembrance: Sunday 4th December, 5.30pm at Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice, Farnham

All are welcome to attend in person as we join together around our Hospice Christmas tree for readings and carols, before switching on the tree lights – with each shining light representing the life of someone who is much loved and missed. We will also be serving mulled wine and mince pies for those who attend.

For those who cannot attend the service in person, you can still watch the service online as it will be broadcast live here.

Guildford Cathedral Illumination: Thursday 8th December, 6.30pm – 10pm at Guildford Cathedral

All are welcome to come and view the names of those being remembered as they are projected up onto the front of the Cathedral.

Please note, the deadline for making a dedication to appear in the Order of Service has now passed. However, the name of your loved one will still be projected onto the front of Guildford Cathedral on Thursday 8th December between 6.30pm and 10pm. During this time you can visit the Cathedral to view the projection and see your loved one’s name lit up.

By making a dedication, you will not only remember your loved one, but also help us to continue caring for those individuals and families who need our support more than ever.

Light up a Life Frequently Asked Questions

What is Light up a Life?

Light up a Life is a traditional event in the Phyllis Tuckwell calendar, where those who wish to celebrate the memory of their loved ones are invited to join us for the annual Light up a Life service. This year’s service will be held at the Hospice in Farnham, on Sunday 4th December at 5.30pm. During the service we will join together for readings and carols – as we turn on the lights on the Christmas tree, with each shining light representing the life of someone who is much loved and missed.

As part of the celebrations we will also be illuminating Guildford Cathedral on the evening of Thursday 8th December. During this time we will project the names of those being remembered onto the front of the Cathedral.

Can I attend this year’s service in person?

We would be delighted if you could join us for this year’s service, which will be held at the Hospice in Farnham on Sunday 4th December at 5.30pm. We also hope that you will be able to visit Guildford Cathedral on Thursday 8th December between 6.30pm and 10pm to view the illumination.

Please note seating will not be available at either the Hospice or Guildford Cathedral, and remember to wrap up warm as both are held outside.

Where do I park?

Parking for the service will be available at South Farnham School and the Abbey School, as well as on surrounding roads. However, as this is a very popular event, wherever possible please car-share with any friends and family who are also coming, to help reduce congestion. Farnham railway station is also just a ten minute walk away.

There will be plenty of parking available at Guildford Cathedral should you choose to visit the illumination on Thursday 8th December.

How can I make a dedication?

To make a dedication in memory of your loved one to appear on Guildford Cathedral on Thursday 8th December, please click here. You can also make a dedication by calling our fundraising team on 01252 729446.

Please note that dedications for the light projection on Guildford Catherdral, MUST reach us by the deadline date of Sunday 27th November.

Will I receive a copy of the Order of Service?

The Order of Service will be available to download from our website from 4th December 2022. It will also be handed out to those who attend the service at the Hospice on Sunday 4th December.

What happens if I can’t attend the service?

If you are unable to attend the service in person you can watch it online, as it will be broadcast live on www.pth.org.uk/lual2022. It will also be recorded, so you can also watch it again at a later date. Our vision is that on the evening of 4th December, people across our community will join with us and take a moment to reflect and remember all those whom we have loved but who are sadly no longer with us.

How much does a dedication cost?

There is no minimum donation for each dedication, all we ask is that you are as generous as possible, so that you can help us to continue providing our vital care to local patients and families – because every day is precious.

Thank you and we look forward to you joining us for Light up a Life 2022.
