September is World Alzheimer’s Month, which aims to highlight the importance of understanding dementia and how it impacts the lives of those who are affected by it.

Caring for a loved one who has Alzheimer’s can be very hard. Phyllis Tuckwell is a local charity which provides supportive and end of life care for patients and families who are living with an advanced or terminal illness, such as cancer, and some of its patients also have dementia. Its Doctors, Nursing team and Therapists understand the additional needs that people with this condition may have, and can provide specialist care tailored to each individual.

Phyllis Tuckwell also supports the families of its patients, from the point their loved one is referred to its care, through to bereavement. Its staff and volunteers offer one-to-one and group counselling, practical support such as helping to arrange care packages and apply for benefits, and are always there to offer a listening ear whenever they are needed.

“We provide tailored care for each of our patients, looking at their individual needs and really getting to know them and their loved ones,” said Cate Seton-Jones, Medical Director at Phyllis Tuckwell. “By looking at not just their clinical needs, but also understanding their mental and emotional wellbeing too, we are able to offer them the best care that we can, and support their families and carers too.”
