We’re looking for a volunteer fishkeeper to support  Shooting Star Children’s Hospices by helping  care for the tropical fish and their tank at Christopher’s. The fish tank is in our family lounge. and our tropical fish provide visual stimulation for supported children and for our families.

Location:  Christopher’s, Old Portsmouth Road, Guildford GU3 1LP

Time:   A regular day of the week, for approximately 2 hours on the day (preferably Friday but flexible) Sharing the role with another volunteer.

Duties and Key Responsibilities

To ensure the tank and water are kept clean, so that the fish stay healthy and the children can continue to enjoy looking at them, you will need to visit the hospice once a week to carry out the following:

  • Complete a 10% water change
  • Clean the inside and outside of the glass
  • Refill the 7 day automatic fish feeder
  • Every 10 weeks or so clean out and change the contents of the canister filter
  • Clean any other items as required related to the tank

Essential Skills and Experience

Some experience of caring for tropical fish would be helpful, however it is not required.  We can provide instructions and demonstrations to any enthusiastic volunteer.

Start date including preferred hours

To share the role with another volunteer fishkeeper and cover for each other over holidays.

Be able to commit to  a regular day of the week (preferably Friday but flexible)  for approx 2 hours (a regular day is needed so that automatic feeder only needs to be filled once a week)

Please also note all volunteer roles at our hospices require us to carry out a DBS Check, this is a simple online procedure. (This role requires a Standard DBS Check)
